Abuja battle Lagos in CBN football final 22 Aug 2015 2:02 AM CBN Abuja will battle CBN Lagos in the final of the 35th edition of the Central Bank of Nigeria Governor’s football tournament scheduled for the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium, Benin City, at 4pm on Saturday (today). The winners will receive a golden trophy, prize money and individual awards. Earlier in the day, CBN llorin and CBN Kaduna will slug it out in the third-place match at the same venue. The teams that participated in the preliminary stage of the competition include Sokoto, Abuja, Gombe and Bauchi, who played their Zone A matches in Kano. Zone B (Bauchi) comprised of teams from Birnin Kebbi, Dutse and Lafia, while Zone C in Jos had teams from Katsina, Gusau, Minna and Kano. In Enugu, teams from Yenagoa, Port Harcourt, Ibadan, and Abuja battled for honours in Zone D. Teams from Asaba, Abakaliki, Awka and Umuahia were in Zone E in Owerri, while teams from Owerri, Makurdi, Calabar and Enugu constituted Zone F in Asaba. Zone G (Lokoja) had teams from Benin, Akure, Oshogbo and Lagos; while Zone H (Benin City) had teams from llorin, Abeokuta, Ibadan and Lokoja. An official of the apex bank said the purpose of the championship was to foster unity among CBN workers irrespective of their socio-cultural and religious affiliations; and also to help develop the physical and psychological fitness of the workers, which is vital for effective performance. The final match is expected to attract dignitaries including the CBN governor, Godwin Emefiele; the Edo State Commissioner for Youth, Sports and Social Mobilisation, Priestly Ediagbonya; Edo Football Association chairman, Frank llaboya; members of the Edo State House of Assembly Sports Committee; top officers of banks and ex-Nigerian football internationals.
