PDP govs angry with NWC over NEC meeting

PDP govs angry with NWC over NEC meeting 22 Aug 2015 1:45 AM Governors and other Peoples Democratic Party stakeholders are angry over the refusal of the members of the party’s National Working Committee to call the meeting of its National Executive Committee since the party lost the general elections in April, Saturday PUNCH has learnt. Their anger was said to have led to a meeting held with some PDP NWC members on Thursday night in Abuja. The meeting was held at the official residence of the Governor of Ondo State, Dr. Olusegun Mimiko. Mimiko is also the Chairman of the PDP Governors’ Forum. Before the Thursday meeting, Mimiko was said to have met with some other stakeholders within the week in Abuja. Members of the NWC were led to the Thursday meeting by the acting National Chairman of the PDP, Prince Uche Secondus. It was gathered that the NWC members were confronted with their refusal to call NEC meeting to enable the party to appraise why it lost the last general elections. Besides, it was also gathered that the NWC members were asked to respond to allegations of corruption levelled against them by the party’s workers. The workers had accused the NWC of squandering N12bn in nine months when the committee said about 50 per cent of the workers would be sacked due to paucity of funds. It was also gathered that the NWC members said the party was waiting for the outcome of the Post-Election Assessment Committee of the party before calling for the NEC meeting. The committee, which is headed by the outgoing Deputy Senate President, Senator Ike Ekweremadu, was set up on May 3. The 15-member committee was later given three-weeks within which to submit its report before it was given 10 weeks extension in June. Speaking after the meeting, Secondus said there were plans to hold both NEC and Board of Trustees meetings of the party soon. He also said another meeting was being planned for other caucuses of the party. Our correspondent gathered that the Mimiko-led committee would meet again in Abuja next week. Copyright PUNCH.
