‘Buhari’s anti-graft war needs global support’ 25 Aug 2015 12:24 AM The Nigerian High Commissioner to Ghana, Sir Ademola Onafowokan, and the Vice Chancellor of the University of Ibadan, Prof. Isaac Adewole, have called on the international community to support the anti-corruption campaign of President Muhammadu Buhari. Onafowakan and Adewole spoke at the opening ceremony of the yearly 6th Ibadan Sustainable Development Summit, being hosted by the UI in collaboration with the African Sustainable Development Network and the Nigeria Sustainable Development Solutions Network. At the opening ceremony of the week-long summit, which has the theme, ‘The Post-2015 Sustainable Development Agenda: Whither Africa”, the Director General of the Centre for Sustaining Development, Ibadan, Prof. Labode Popoola, development practitioners, policy makers and politicians from many African countries, were present. In his keynote address at the summit, Onafowokan expressed sadness at the growing rate of poverty and hunger in Nigeria and some other countries in the Sub-Sahara Africa, stressing that corruption was responsible for the scourge. He said, “The cost of doing business in Africa is high and not encouraging while corruption is endemic. There is the need for the development of social security and welfare systems that guarantee minimum standard of living in the continent. “I hope the efforts of the present government in Nigeria in cleansing the economy will be supported by all and sundry, particularly the global communities. Definitely, with the way things are now going, there is light at the end of the tunnel in Nigeria.” Adewole, who was represented at the ceremony by the Deputy Vice Chancellor, Administration, Prof. Emilolorun Ayelari, said Nigeria needed good governance to triumph over economic challenges.
